Mount Harvard, fourteen thousand vertical feet of pure goodness

July 5th, 2008 Posted in travel | No Comments »

Mount Harvard @ 14,427 ft
the 3rd tallest peak in Colorado, 4th in contiguous U.S.

First of all our goal was to climb both Mount Harvard & Columbia since there is about a 2 mile ridge hike that connects them. But it did not work out as planned timing wise (as it is a rule of thumb for safety in Colorado to summit before noon). Since this is a 10-15 mile round-trip hike, we probably should have started a couple hours before sunrise. We also did not know that many who do this combination hike (Harvard & Columbia) backpack up into the valley at treeline and spend the night, cutting the hike distance in half.

We stayed at the Collegiate Peaks Campground Thursday night at the base of Mount Yale (Buena Vista is about 2.5-3 hours from Denver). The campground is at about 9800 feet. When we first got there (about 2pm) I was hoping there would be some walk-in’s left and there were, but only 2, and only for 7/3. The rest of the 56 campsites were reserved or taken for the rest of the weekend. Which I should have known better. Lucky for us we were in National Forest so we could camp anywhere along the road, as long as we were 100 feet from any road/water, etc.

We drove into town (Buena Vista) and took a look around, small town, about 1 of everything and nothing more. One saloon, one pizza joint (best pizza in town), one hamburger joint (with great milkshakes)… etc. You get the idea. We also spotted a deer hopping neighbors fences to lay in the grassy shade. All the time meeting wonderful characters in town, one in-particular was a guy in an orange jumpsuit yelling at the deer and chasing it, “just to see what it’ll do”…

So we got a good night sleep, went to bed around 8pm, and woke up around 5am on Friday. We left the campsite around 6am, got to Country Road 365 to find a patch in the road that had way too many ruts and too deep, along with rocks, for the low clearance 200SX of mine to climb…. Not anticipating this (since the guide book and maps did not say 4×4 was needed — which they do say if it is needed), and unwilling to turn around, we decided to park the car and hike in to the trailhead from there, an estimated 3.2 miles, adding another hour to our trip each way (an extra 6.4 miles & 2 hours we did not plan for).  We left the car at 7:15am.

We finally arrived at the North Cottonwood Trailhead about 8:15am, (which we were shooting for 6:30-7:00am). We register at the trailhead and head up the mountain.

Summit – 1:30 pm – yikes! So we opted against trying to do Columbia, since it was getting VERY late, although the weather was cooperating, we thought we’d play it safe as it is about 2 hours just to get back down to the treeline.

We get back to the trailhead around 6:15pm, and back to our car at 7:15pm. Overall this was a 12-hour hike for us, about 7 hours to get from car to summit, and 5 hours to get back down. Total distance was an estimated 17 miles with about 5,427 feet of vertical distance up. (9,000 ft to 14,427ft and back down)

So thoroughly exhausted (and dehydrated as we didn’t take water for a 12-hour hike, only 8-hours :P) we decided to have dinner in Buena Vista and head home to sleep on our own bed 🙂 Got home about 11:30pm. But we can say, we left it all on the mountain.

**as a side note, we had no ill effects from altitude, only shortness of breath the last 1000ft or so**

City Park Jazz & Juno’s 4th Birthday

June 1st, 2008 Posted in events | No Comments »

Wow, the last four years has gone by quick.  Today we celebrated Juno’s birthday in fashion by taking him to the first City Park Jazz concert of the year.  We walked over to City Park, joined some friends from church and hung out under the trees enjoying the beautiful weather, jazz music, and watching the sun set.

Memorial Day Weekend

May 27th, 2008 Posted in house | No Comments »

Last weekend was a blast.  We had a lot of fun with Patrick coming up for the weekend helping us out with some house projects, barbecuing on Sunday afternoon, and running the BolderBoulder 10K (results) on memorial day in honor of my three friends who have served (and are currently serving), along with our family members, all who have volunteered their lives to protect our country and fight for our freedoms.  We salute you.

In terms of the house, we made some solid progress.  Saturday Laura painted the master closet while Patrick and I worked on installing the dryer vent, insulating the water heater and cutting and taping down the padding for the carpet in the master closet. We also started installing the ceiling fan in the bedroom.  Sunday we went to church and came back to get started on day 2 of work.  Since we hadn’t had lunch yet, we started with the grill.  We set up the grill and of course had to “make sure it was working” 🙂  A big thanks goes to our Grandma & Grandpa Besemer for providing us with our “new kitchen” for the next couple of months.  Oh and the burgers… they were fantastic.

The dust begins…

May 21st, 2008 Posted in house | No Comments »

So Monday the demolition for the kitchen began… they accomplished it all in a day which is good, but as you’ll see from the pictures it was pretty dusty due to partial demo of a plaster wall in the kitchen.  Overall it makes the kitchen seem a lot bigger not having that wall there and even with a refrigerator, while we’re not gaining any SF, that area will be more functional than it was, along with some extra cabinet and counter space.  Now we have to pick out our stone.  The cabinets have been ordered, so 6-8 weeks we’ll see some more progress!

Moving in….

May 12th, 2008 Posted in house | No Comments »

Well this last weekend was a busy one for sure.  Friday night we finished packing the rest of our stuff around the apartment, labeling boxes, organizing boxes, etc.  Saturday we started off running… literally.  We ran the Mamma Mia 5K at City Park in Denver.  The run benefited HIV Care Link (a Christian outreach of compassion and hope committed to preventing the spread of HIV, empowering and supporting those affected by HIV/AIDS and equipping the church to minister effectively to people living with HIV.)  The race was also a qualifier for the race we are running in two weeks, the BolderBoulder 10K.

After the race our small group from church helped us move.   All-in-all, from the first box into the truck, to the last box out of the truck, only took 3 hours.  When we were finished, we all sat down, had some pizza & drinks and watched it snow!  Ok, so it was kinda like frozen rain / snow pellets, but it was God’s providence at hand (with the impeccable timing of finishing before the weather hit & having such wonderful friends to come out and help.)

Here’s the completed list for last weekend:

  • Moved
  • Unpack
  • Moved refrigerator into basement.
  • Disassembled metal shelving to take to basement, Reassembled.
  • Pads on all furniture to protect the floors
  • Replaced toilet seat & filler valve, filler float & flush valve float.
  • Caulk windows in back, took out antenna in front, caulked hole.
  • Fixed bathroom window to open
  • Replaced all batteries in smoke detectors, tested.
  • Cable management in basement
  • Seeded lawn, watered.
  • Started hanging wood blinds
  • Painted 3rd coat in green room

We’re Grounded!

May 8th, 2008 Posted in house | No Comments »

Well today the electrician came and grounded all our outlets for us (replaced all the 2-prong outlets with 3-prong).   Installed a GFI in the bathroom, and also installed another outlet and fixed a light in the basement (for the computer/workbench room)… this is all very exciting.

So yesterday we met with the kitchen GC to talk some more about the cabinets and construction.  Demo for the kitchen could start as early as next week.

Our 1″ wood blinds should arrive today!  Also very exciting that they’ll get here before we move all our stuff in the house, adding a bit more security & charm to the house.  Hopefully we’ll have them installed before or during this weekend.

Also done yesterday, we got the basement window open and storm window off so we can vent the dryer.  We also hooked up the washer & dryer downstairs and leveled them, got them ready to do laundry once the outlet was grounded…. So immediately after the electrician came today, Laura started our FIRST load of laundry in our VERY OWN laundry machine!  Finally!  No more quarters!
